fat media update number one

Some of you know this already, but some of you don't: I was interviewed for a feminist/size acceptance article in iris (a Charlottesville feminist mag) so many months ago I'd actually forgotten it. And now the issue's out.

It's funny to read it, because I was at a very specific point on my ideological path - shifting out of being Really Very Angry about fat women's fixation on the male gaze and [livejournal.com profile] feminist's tendency to talk about how you can be Too Fat and everyone needs to Try To Be Healthy (everyone's favorite euphemism for "diet, damn fatty"). And I was shifting into finding all these points of intersection quite fascinating, a fact that I state like 22 times in the exact same words in the article.

If you're local, you can see it at Plan 9. If you're regional, you can probably find it in independent/feministy bookstores. If you're neither, well... sucks to be you [assuming your definition of "sucking" involves not being able to read me babbling in a magazine].

I sound like a twelve year old, apparently talk! like I use exclamation points! all! the! time! and, in my opinion, come off way less articulate than everyone. But overall the issue and article are pretty good. And I'd rather seem dumb in a smart magazine than vice versa. Also, mad props to [livejournal.com profile] cavlec, who is mentioned by idea though not name in my interview.

*blinks* Who, me? But I deeply, fundamentally don't get this shit and have said so on multiple occasions!

(Don't mind me. I've gone up another size and am not handling it well.)

Grab a copy for me and when we meet up I'll reimburse you. Won't be on your next trip, probably, as I'll be madly moving in still. But sometime, surely.

[identity profile] keryx.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
But you totally, radically, made the whole idea gel in my head that people have a right to NOT think they're "beautiful" and moreover, to not CARE. Which was a lot of what I was thinking about at the time, and thus a lot of what I talked about.

congratulations, fellow iris publishee! i'll look for your piece next time i'm at Plan 9. (as far as i know, they also carry it at the local Barnes and Noble and at New Dominion Books downtown.)

[identity profile] keryx.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
ooh! are you in the current issue, or were you in one i missed?

[identity profile] orkid.livejournal.com 2005-07-01 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
i have a book review in #47 (the passion issue) and an article in #49 (shattering the myths). i could send you one of the latter, if you like.

Although a very experienced interviewee might be able to avoid repeating themself no matter who interviews them, a good interviewer would have asked you sufficiently varied questions that you wouldn't have been able to answer all of them with the exact same words.

Sure, but everyone who works on this magazine is a volunteer and most aren't going to pursue careers in publishing. I mean, she could have used a thesaurus on my behalf, too, but the nice thing is that all the interviews come off like casual conversations, which is really what they were. If I sound like a dork... well, I am one, so no biggie. :)
