For those of you reading my LJ just to keep on top of the latest exciting words and phrases to add to your vocab, I bring you... 'clue-by-four' (coined by someone else in the comments to someone else's friends-locked post), as in "Someone please hit that asshat with a clue-by-four before s/he makes my brain bleed".

You're welcome. ;)

I love that phrase. I think I heard it first either on Buffy or in Buffy fandom.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's very Buffyesque. :)

The phrase has been around since long before Buffy. I first saw it on the soc.singles Usenet group in the early 90s. I doubt it was generated there, but if so, it was probably due to someone's combining the phrases "clue brick" and "two by four," both of which were used in the context of getting the attention of someone who was insensitive to common "I find you attractive" signals.

Thus at a soc.singles gathering one year, the host sewed clue bricks for all of us (foam blocks covered with red corduroy).
