keryx: (wells theater)
The old Attucks Theater in downtown Norfolk has been renovated & is being used for dance & concerts and such.

Yeah, sure, this news is like a year old, but I just found it out.

When I was a teenager, my magnet school moved into a floor of office & classroom space in the Wells Theater. If you went up two floors to the unrenovated area (semi-adjacent the lighting booth), there were still old "colored" signs and various other things from the fifties. That was, I think, the first time I confronted the fact of my own privilege. As in, I would never have to climb four flights of stairs to hot, cramped, low-visibility seating just to see a movie (which is what the Wells would have been showing in the late fifties, if I recall correctly) because of my skin color - or anything else about me, for that matter.

But it was also achingly, movingly beautiful up there. [Psst... tonight's icon is a photo of the Wells of my high school days with a photo of its 1913 facade (complete with identical street lamp, woot!) imposed upon it. Thus the chaos - they massively changed the facade in renovation.
