tv turnoff week
Apr. 21st, 2006 09:58 amI bopped over to TV Turnoff Week thanks to Paul's apropos skewering of the project, and it just pisses me off.
So, what I was saying in the comments of my previous post (about my frustration at there not being obvious non-weightloss ways for people to do things like motivate themselves to exercise or eat well for them) - that goes double for the stupid TV week thing.
I talked awhile ago about how much not watching TV improved my opinion of the world, right? But that doesn't mean I think TV watching is inherently the devil. It does mean that not watching TV turned off the one consistent stream of anti-fat propaganda into my home. It also meant that my source for ideas about Mainstream America is now actual people (however, it also means I don't get exposed to as diverse a cross-section of people or stereotypes, either, nor do I know who had the Best Week Ever - VH1/MTV/Daily Show are the things I miss about TV), I think that the world is much much queerer than I used to, and I can't watch teevee as background noise like I used to (intriguingly, I either totally tune it out or am captivated).
Anyhow. Despite my hipster news withdrawal, not watching television has made me a much less angry person, which probably makes me a little healthier. Buuuuut. Not watching teevee has fuckall to do with being fat or not (though I'll grant maybe the things I do that mean I have no time to even watch my Netflix have contributed to my shrinking), and I would really like to personally kick the ass of the people who are now associating my fat-positive no-teevee life with weightloss.
Stop co-opting the good shit, people.
