This is largely a list for [livejournal.com profile] quietdeath, or anyone else who wants to try out this gardening co-op idea. Keep in mind that I am not at all anal about gardening & until I know what my fence will cost, I'm assuming I'll do most of the work myself. So. Uh, not everything I plant will be successful. I'm pretty sure I can keep tomato and pepper plants alive (plus, most herbs are insanely growy around here), and I know I can grow roses and morning glories.

Herbs/fragrant stuff: jasmine, chives, basil, catnip, possibly mint (which has to be far from the catnip, as they're easily confused, and catnip makes a lousy mojito), cilantro. Apparently you can also grow garlic around here, which sounds like fun. These will all get planted near the back porch, with the figs.

Veggies: spinach & collards, tomatoes (big ones! small ones!), cucumbers, butter beans & some form of pea (for the flowers). I'm also going to attempt beets, okra and a pepper of some sort. I'm going to try to keep veggies along the fence in the backyard. I don't think I want big garden beds, and the unplanted side of the fence gets amazing sun all day.

Fruits: already have a pear tree. I'm planting figs & grapes, and possibly a cherry tree. Don't expect any of these to fruit yet. The grapes will go along the fence with the veggies.

Flowers: my parents have a rose-of-Sharon that grew in my great grandmother's house in Michigan. It did alright in Norfolk and is fine in MD, so I hope a cutting will live in Richmond. Cause, native or not, that's just awesome. They're also going to give me some of the rosebush that's as old as I am; the roses smell intense & are good in bowls and bud vases. Both of these are going out front, where the sun's not so harsh. I'm also going to fence a weird little alcove into the yard, and I plan to cover that fence with every possible local variety of morning glory.

My father's lending me a tiller after I visit next weekend. Tiller! But not the kind on a sailboat.

Mmmm, that all sounds good. You may want to pot your mint and catnip because that stuff is mad invasive. I got my greens and peas seeded this weekend in the drizzle and I"m so excited to see what comes up.

I really want to get some fruit trees in, but the gardening ladies say that we're too humid for anything but figs and berries, and I've already got five blueberry bushes in. Also, apparently my HOA has to approve trees? Yeah, whatever. *eye rolls*

I second the potting mint thing (never grown catnip before). My mom grew it in her raised beds on our deck, and it took over everything. That and the basil, but the basil was ok b/c it takes a lot to make pesto.
