The neverending email stream from Ms. Dipshit, as [livejournal.com profile] cavlec so eloquently termed her, is going to drive me insane if I continue to read it.

Suffice to say, it is mind-blowingly absurd to assume that other people are misunderstanding you when they question or disagree with you, but to say "it's just my little old opinion la dee la" when you flame them like that Carson guy from Queer Eye lighting an exhaust hose filled with gasoline. Dude, she's running around calling people out left and right. Egads.

We've all encountered these people, right? I always want to do something other than step away in disgust, but it just doesn't seem to work. Speaking back only feeds their insanity.

I don't live near the (aforementioned recently turned accursedly pink) Torrid, but nevertheless occasionally venture there for clothing.

Which I did this weekend, to my own great delight, particularly as the store has not gone totally pink and silly and many things were on sale.

What I acquired: a silly but very cute black and pink sundress, another dress not on the website with a very Wednesday Addams vibe (buttons, white collar and sleeves, black dress), a simple casual-friendly black pleaty skirt, a black sorta Esther Williamsy swimsuit, a polkadotty shirt that will finally complete the crazy outfit that my cherry applique skirt wants to be, and a pair of ruffled underpants.

I was tempted to buy a strapless dress (it was very cute), but have never been able to find a strapless bra that could both stay up and accomodate breathing - so, no thank you, cute red dress.

The satisfying thing about the Torrid is that it's totally not work clothes. It's rebellious, functionless shopping. You don't buy things there for any reason other than the pleasure you'll get in wearing them.

Which is, by the way, rather remarkable in even being an option for us fat folk. The vast majority of fat women's clothing is just plain matronly, and it used to be much, much worse. If you want to wear formless and/or stretch clothes designed for amazons, by all means feel free. I'd like a polkadotted pencil skirt, thankyouverymuch. And it's nice to know I could have one.

So, yeah, the Torrid. One of those rare contexts in which shopping can be empowering.

See, nowhere in the Uk does cute stuff for big girls. We have one, maybe two, chains that cater for 'outsize' (as its so euphemistically called) and the stuff there is on the whole pretty rank. I do wonder if thats why the whole ethos of 'embracing your shape' and its accompanying campaign/ movement has never taken off over here in the same way, in that it's difficult to enjoy your size when you're wearing a shapeless marquee. I know that when *I* have felt the need to lose weight it's been largely because i couldn't get cute stuff to fit. On the other hand, there's many good big-size lingerie places over here- figleaves.com and bravissimo.com are two that might be worth checking out, although i know it's a pain when you can't try on and have to send mail order stuff back.

I'm a DD cup (and the Princess is a G, bless her!) and I've recently been brave enough to start wearing strappy/ strapless things aided by a top-of-the-range Berlei bra, and lots of toupee tape (which is clever stuff and WORKS!) - well worth giving it a try (although i recommend a practice first!)

Toupee tape? As in, tape that holds on your fake hair? You have to explain the details of this one to me.

I guess I'm odd-fat-woman-out here. I like long drapey "shapeless" kinds of things. Favorite fabric is crinkle rayon.

I don't often wear caftans, I admit, because that's not the right kind of drape. But I do have one or two, and I like the ones I have.

I got plenty shape, thanks. I don't need my clothes to shape me; I shape *them*.

Maybe I used the right words... the drapey things aren't what I'm thinking about (though I couldn't see me doing anything LONG, no matter how drapey or form-fitting). I'm thinking about the stiff sacks made out of unbreathable stretch fabrics that the Lane Bryant seems so fond of. Someone must like them, or they wouldn't sell. But in my mind, they make people look like sausages in boxes.

Wow. Can you find me an URL for the kind of thing you're talking about? I'm dead sure I don't own it -- I'm dead sure I wouldn't want to!

Like this. I think it's the fabric more than anything, but these suits look icky on anyone.

Eek. Yeah. Point made. I could wear those ten years ago and not look horrid, but... that was ten years ago.
