I am apparently completely clueless. I had no idea Barack Obama would be the only black person in the Senate. How blatant a reminder that this country is still racist is that?

Of course, there's also no (as far as I know) gay member of the Senate. And only like 15 (if that many) women.

The Senate sucks, is what I'm saying. We need to change that.

Only voters can change the Senate and the House. If you are really pissed about the situation, get out there and become an active supporter for either party.

Indeed. I've been working on the women/pro-choice angle via EMILY's List for a year or so (they help campaigns and help bring donors together). I wonder if there's a similar project to address the racial imbalance in Congress. Worth research.

The best approach to that situation is to forget politics and find some real talent. Convince he or she to take up the challenge and then go after the political angle. Real talent will win regardless of race. Playing the race card with sharks like Jackson and Sharpton almost always loses. I'll vote for talent any time.
