If any of you lovely people are contemplating a resolution for the new year involving some trendy diet, I invite you to purchase this goofy pin from Torrid instead.

Although I suspect no one thinking along the trendy diet lines would be reading my LJ anyhow.

Poor no-pasta girl. ;) I feel for you. And yes, the low-carb thing has some positives (I really like some of the low-carb foods, like soy chips, for instance). Trendy dieting has no positives in my mind, though.

Oh, man, do I ever love carbs. I tend to give any diet involving high protein the evil eye. What really gets me about the high-protein diets is that some people don't understand that they can't eat all the steaks and eggs and cheese that they want, and then whine when they gain weight.

(And some things need carbs to taste good. Carb-free beer? No thanks!)

Ahem.

Some people DO know how to do low carb right. I lost 50lbs on Atkins last year and felt better than I have in years. But I also worked out and did excerises to strengthen my lungs (asthma) and tone my muscles (bad knees/back/wrists/name something). I have lowered my blood pressure, dropped my cholesterol, and got out of the "hi! You have pre-diabites!" warning zone.

Have you actually sat down and read the second revision of Dr. Atkin's book? From the way you're talking, the answer's probably no. Don't knock it until you understand it properly, toots.

(Rant Mode = On)

It THROUGHLY pisses me off when people go around knocking fad diet/craze/eating style/whatevevr without taking the time to actually understand it. People automagically assume that just it's something they don't agree with or something that doesn't work for them it's awful and evil and no one should do it.

Aktins works for some people. South Beach works for some people. The Zone works for some people. The traditional doctor's recomended 1500 calorie no salt/no fat/no cholesterol/no taste diet works for some people. THE FUCKING CABBAGE DIET works for some people.

Bodies are different, metabolisms are different, needs are different. You have NO right to tell me what will and won't work for me. Only me and my doctor know that.

Uh, maybe you and I shouldn't be friends, actually. I'm not advocating that diets don't work. I'm advocating that DIETS ARE BAD, on principal.

Nor was [livejournal.com profile] catchstars saying that you didn't diet the "right" way, simply mocking the trend to say "I'm on Atkins, so I'm going to eat 5 steaks today".

See my other comments about body image and dieting elsewhere. It's a person's own choice to do as they wish with their body.

For me, Aktins is less a 'diet' in the traditional meaning of the word diet, and more a change in the fundimental way I eat to the end of getting my body into a condition *I* wish it to be in.

I wish to no longer be in the category of morbidly obese and have to struggle to walk up more than one flight of stairs. I wish to no longer be in danger of being diagnosed with type II diabites by the time I'm 40. I wish to not have to have knee replacement surgery by the time I'm 40.

This is not about 'socially acceptiable' normals of beauty. This is about my health.

For me, the line between a personal choice and a contribution to a cultural conceit that claims fat is unattractive and unhealthy is a very fine one. In your first comment you highlighted that you had lost 50 lbs. It may not be about socially acceptable standards of beauty, but it may also be about the idea that being fat, not having crap eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle, makes you sick.

Sorry if I came across as arrogant, but I did mention that what gets me is the "some" people who overdo it. It's very easy to overdo when the diets are so overhyped. I have no doubt that they work, but most people don't read the book, they just go ahead thinking that eating all meat and fatty stuff is Atkins. I'm very wary of the marketing, because it's misleading. Eating too much of anything is going to make you gain weight. Because of how most high-protein diets have been portrayed by the media, there are people who view the diet as some sort of a magical smorgasbord where anything they eat melts away the pounds. They hear Jennifer Aniston or whoever say that she ate bacon at every meal for 3 months, and don't hear anything else. They don't know that she had only one strip with a tofu smoothie and some lettuce or whatever. What these fad dieters hear is "bacon everyday" and go hog wild (pardon the pun).

Because you took the care to understand it, Atkins worked for you. I don't think that nobody should do it, but (like doing anything) that everybody who does should understand it before starting. And anyone planning on changing their eating habits that drastically should consult a doctor.

I have a button on my work monitor...

...that reads "Who says Goddesses have to be anorexic?" That's my contribution.

(Of course, the other one says, "If not completely satisfied, welcome to the real world.")

I'm not contemplating any diets in particular, but I still want the pin!
