And sometimes, I start mixing dance and politics, just a wee bit.

Did you like how I was all "hey, how do y'all feel about this [what I find to be deeply offensive] word?", slowly eeking in the fat politics? Hey, I try to be diplomatic.

Go you! :) And for the record, I like "fat" much better than "fluffy." Fuck a bunch of euphemisms, I say.

But if I covered you in honey and feathers, you'd be fat AND fluffy. And I'd be all sniffly.

I always think of "overweight" and "underweight" as states of mind, rather than physical descriptions. I describe myself as overweight sometimes but it has nothing to do with how much I weigh, only whether I'm feeling comfortable with my body at the moment. Today I am not overweight. Last week I was. I weigh exactly the same. I wasn't at all overweight when I was 20 pounds heavier but 10 years ago and 50 pounds lighter I was hugely overweight. "Over" is just a state of mind to me -- it means I weigh more than I'm comfortable with.

That's exactly why I think the words suck so royally - they get used as if they have some sort of Great Scientific Truth behind them (especially by dorktastic obesity researchers), but what they actually mean is that someone is uncomfortable. And I think we have a very hard time separating that comfort-in-my-body thing from this idea that we're eeevil if we're fat, or eat, or speak up, or take up space. Logically we (most of us) know that taking up space is not evil, but we're not completely invulnerable to the idea - and it comes out as "I feel fat", or "I'm uncomfortable".

I'll drop the word "overweight" from my vocabulary if I can steal "dorktastic" for every day use.
