This week's WHB question is about Christina and Britney. Yes, THAT Christina and Britney. Hee. I wrote an at least semi-serious response on my blog.

Also, what is the real feminine alternative to "guys"? I don't think it's "gals"; that word seems freakish and outdated. I say "chicks", but it's really hard to tell whether someone is a tasteless offensive schmuck or a powerful woman with a sense of irony with "chicks". How do you get the same casual air of "guys" without using, you know - "guys" in your conversation?

I'm stumped. Oh, and someone got a bit huffy with me on WHB (on the "guys" question), and instead of emailing back, I posted it on the site as a question to readers - link. I felt so mature and reasonable.

I like 'guys'. I've always felt it's a more or less collective word, I don't see it as so masculine. I tend to see the idea of our having to find a female equivalent as counterproductive - singling ourselves out and segregating. Are men so horrible that we can't bear to even be collectively grouped with them in a "you guys"? When do people cross over and start protesting the fact that "human" relates to both male and female? ("Humanette"?) (No one answer that.) Y'all is too slangy for me to be an alternative, I'll stick with guys.

Yeah, I can't see using "y'all", and I LIVE in the south US. It's just dorky. Kinda like using "people" in the same context is. Bleh.

I don't think the issue for people who dislike "guys" is so much that they want distance from men, but acknowledgement that it's weird to use a word both to refer to men and everyone, when there's no equivalent that refers to women and everyone.
