My self-imposed coaching assignment for this week is to try out a daily spiritual/connectedness/whatever you want to call it practice that works for me. It's shaping into a small, simple collection of physical acts (being on the porch and the air is a big one, as is the pure physical practice of morning warmup), a moving but seated meditation that's sortof offering to the world, and a reading I do each day at the office to connect work to something deeper.

It made me curious, if you'll share: what are your personal practices? What do they mean to you?

I do not consider myself spiritual at all. But my daily practice of walking to work in the morning, with no ipod or phone or walkman, is turning into an incredibly important part of my life. I haven't taken the subway in ages - it's a 35 minute walk, taking me down little side streets (with so many morning glories! and yard gnomes and strange graffiti...) and watching the sky change, and now the trees starting to turn - it's incredibly steadying, clarifying and energizing.

Two things, both of which are new to me:

Walking...nowhere in particular. My GF and I recently adopted a dog, so it's become necessary for me to walk outside several times a day. The past few years I've avoided walking whenever possible due to physical pain/minor mobility issues. It's weird to get out there and just take in what's going on around me. It feels peaceful and good even though it often hurts.

And, on a related note, I've started paying attention to how my body feels. (This was my therapist's recommendation, because I spend most of my time thinking about what's in my head, and not on my body.) It feels strange, but also satisfying to finally pay attention to my physical form. Not to do anything with that information, but just to note it.
