I got a start on the back garden today!

Well. Technically, this afternoon I interviewed a garden coach. I'd been thinking "gosh, if only I could get someone to start the garden and tell me how to use it"... and? The local garden co-op will do that! You have to, you know, pay them, but it's a lot cheaper than landscaping (though perhaps less conventionally beautiful) and more useful. We're going to start setting up beds and build a cold frame this weekend.

Later we'll do summer vegetables and start some fruit trees. Meanwhile, the figs and grapes I bought thinking they'd stay dormant in my house until planting time are absolutely the opposite of dormant. One of the grapes is plotting to take over the kitchen. I suspect it's recruiting the other plants as comrades, Mme Defarge style.

WAIT WAIT.... I cannot possibly condone two of my friends spending money on a garden coach and not even think of me. Tell me arovd... is your yard shaded?

Not true. But I will tell you that if there is all shade in your yard, then growing veggies will be terribly difficult/impossible.

Besides... it's the back 5 pine trees on the other side of the main fenced yard. Really Lug... not even I need that much wood.

no my potential veggie garden is full sun! i built the box on the south side of the house, right in the sunny spot!! i tried to grow veggies in the backyard and that did not work at all.

Full sun is best, and it is possible to make some beautiful food in your own yard with a little bit of love and work.

What do you want to grow Tupelo? And I could probably help you for free with some small basic crops. After I graduate in 60 days I will probably be free to help set up larger fall crops.

Ideally I would like to grow things we like to eat. But for starters anything easy and consumable is welcome. Some potential favorites would be tomatoes, hot chili peppers, most fruits, squashes, um.....what's good in this climate?

my yard? my yard is a GIANT OVERGROWN MESS that is yes, mostly shaded. The front is all just pine needles, and that's fine... it's the back yard that's a fright. I've got crazy giant yuccas I don't know what to do with because they're SHARP, and a crazy giant sort of super tall reedy/grassy thing by the pond that is also OW SHARP. And get this - a BLACKBERY bush just randomly appeared last year... complete with fruit. crazy.

My garden plot on the other hand, is a full-sun raised bed that is completely empty. I want to start a vegetable garden but I need hand holding!

Appeared in a bad place to produce good berry yield. Bird poop happens... but not always in the best of locations.

They charge $900 to set up all the beds and plants (inclusive of plants, compost, soil & work, and then you can hire them for more consulting. But I think quietdeath will probably offer a better deal.

It's worth it to me - between the supplies, labor & coordination, I suspect I come out better than even on this deal. But if you traded heavier coordination and could therefore get supplies for free, that would also be a solid plan!

It's probably a really good price for a complete garden start of that size.
